From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2–Buddy and his mother make a spring trip to the ocean. As they stroll along the sandy beach, the inquisitive cub collects treasures. As he adds each shell to his bucket, his mother tells him its name and shares pertinent details about it. The book concludes with additional shell details and clear directions for crafting an I Shell Return bookmark. Mingled with the creative paper-cut illustrations are many crisp, color photographs. Front endpapers show examples of cold-water shells, while back endpapers feature samples of warm-water shells. This book would be a wonderful selection for caregivers to read as preparation for a beach trip. It also integrates well with primary-grade units on marine life.–Lynn K. From Booklist
A bear named Buddy and his mother stroll along the shore picking up seashells at low tide. During their morning at the beach, Mama provides interesting facts and plenty of food, while Buddy makes discoveries, relates the sea animals' external skeletons to his own internal one, discovers the sound of the ocean in a shell, and learns that a conchologist is one who "collects shells and looks at shells and learns all about shells." The collage illustrations use cut papers to create the characters and setting, as well as photo elements to depict actual shells, making the book all the more useful. The shells show up well in contrast to the plain colors and flat surfaces that serve as their backdrops. The closing pages present miscellaneous facts about shells and instructions for making a theme-related bookmark. From the author/illustrator of Seeds! Seeds! Seeds! (2004) and Leaves! Leaves! Leaves! (2003), here's another playful yet informative introduction to nature. Phelan, Carolyn

A book that grows with your child
By Denise Crawford
Do you know how to differentiate between whelk, mussle, and clam shells when you find bits and pieces at the beach?

This book tells the story of a little bear who goes to the beach with his mother and she teaches him about the different shells. This is the first book by Wallace that I have ever read, so I was initially a little put off by the cartoonish/simple illustrations of the bear and the landscape. The pictures of the shells, however, were fabulous -- like actual photos. The pictures showed great detail and would be a perfect way to compare the variety and type found at the beach to help identify them.

As another reviewer commented, the story is a little long and I would echo comments that the narrative is likely more appropriate for the child with a longer attention span or one who is 5-6 years old. My 3.5 year old grandson loves to walk along and dig on the beach to collect the shells he finds along the shore. He loved looking at the pictures and I just paraphrased the story part to keep pace with his attention span. So for now, we look at the pictures of shells and compare our collection of shells to the pages, but as he ages I think he will enjoy the story more.

The added bonus of this book--I'm learning something too!

An enjoyable primer about seashells
By J. Chambers
Even as a grown-up, I have to acknowledge that I enjoyed Nancy Elizabeth Wallace's colorful picture book about seashells. It's a nice basic primer on marine mollusks (soft-bodied invertebrates that create and inhabit shells), using the storyline of young Buddy and his mom spending a day at the beach looking for seashells. Buddy's mom knows all about shells, and she educates Buddy about the shells they find. Buddy is fascinated by shells, and his humorous nature shows in the jokes he comes up with.

Graphically the book is outstanding, from the colored paper figures of Buddy and his mom to the color photography of the different kinds of shells. Some of the vocabulary is likely to be too advanced for first graders, but that's okay, since it's primarily a picture book, and it doesn't hurt to challenge kids with new words.

I'm reviewing the paperback edition of the book, but I noticed that some reviewers commented about the small print in the Kindle edition. I was curious enough to download the Kindle edition to my Kindle Fire. As I expected, the book features what Amazon calls "Kindle Text Pop-Up" for reading text over color images. Just double-tap any text region and it will expand for easy reading.

Awful dialogue with no plot
By Debra
First a quick note - my version was in full color and the illustrations were well done.

The cover and concept is fantastic, but it would have been so much better without the "story." Buddy goes to the beach with his mom and asks forced questions which his mom seems to have an unusually sophisticated response to (like the obscure scientific name of an obscure shell). Then Buddy makes some tangentially related comment - usually a really bad pun or a reference to food, and then they have a snack.

The dialogue is so painful that I find it difficult to read it to my kids without making fun of it. This conversation would never, ever happen and there's nothing to help you suspend disbelief. It would have been much better without the bears since it gives some useful information, but the bears, while cute, are distracting. This is especially true since there is absolutely no plot whatsoever.
