Book has great illustrations, tips and projects

I am completely new to serging and this book has certainly been useful! I like much of the detail in this book. The Photo examples are great! The wording is simply stated and useful. There is a troubleshooting section that will help if your tensions are off. Not only does it cover the basics of serging, but it also includes plenty of tips. There are hints for getting accurate seam allowances, working with thick fabrics, decorative threads etc. I also like it that she discussed the different useful presser feet available for a serger. I didn't know about these! There are many projects (at least half of the book in fact). These projects are to give you a hands on with the different techniques the book covers. For example, napkins with rolled hems, wire edged ribbons, creating lettuce edges on knit fabrics and more! There is also a section that talks about coverstitching. I don't have this feature on my serger, so cant say much about it.

I'm not sure if there is really any cons to this book. Perhaps if your looking for an in depth manual with lots of reading this wouldn't be for you. After only 38 pages of teaching she gets into the hands on learning projects. Several of them I didn't find especially cute, but certainly the techniques could be adjusted to anyone's style and liking...and who knows you might think they're all cute!

About the Author
Giovanni Civardi was born in Milan in 1947. While training to become a sculptor, portrait artist and illustrator at the Free Life-Study School of the Accademia di Brera, he also studied medicine and surgery. For over a decade, he worked as an illustrator, producing commissions for newspapers, magazines and book covers. During frequent trips to France and Denmark, Civardi put on one-man exhibitions of this work and pursued his interest in studying the relationship between medical anatomy and the human form as depicted by the artist. His experience gained from teaching anatomy, life drawing and portraiture in schools and institutions over many years has led to the publication of numerous books in which Civardi's experiences are brought into focus.

I have been a fan of the Mack Bolan, aka “The Executioner” series for many years but I just started reading the earlier published books in this Mack Bolan series of Don Pendleton’s. This one (San Diego Siege #14 the Executioner) is “an oldie but a goodie” (Published in 1972). Mack Bolan had finished his business in other cities fighting the mafia but is now in San Diego doing some surveillance work.

He is there to not only destroy the Mafia Mob in San Diego, but to also help his old Vietnam commander “Howlin Harlan Winters.” It appears the General had some problems, possibly with working with the local mafia. When Bolan finds his old commander with a hole in his head and the gun on the floor near his right hand, with what looks like a suicide, the executioner and his team go to work to investigate the link between the mob and General Winters. As with every Mack Bolan adventure, there are always a host of people out to get the "executioner."

I never give away too much when reviewing a novel because it spoils it for the reader. If you are a Mack Bolan (the executioner) fan and have not read this book you should check it out. It is a good read.

I would give this book zero stars if I could

This book is very poorly written, I am furious that it is so outrageously expensive. I sincerely feel that I could have written a better book myself. It is hard to follow and disorganized. There are times when I had a headache just trying to catch what they were trying to say among the random spelling and grammatical flaws and the citations thrown in at random. I usually highlight key terms and can get chunks of pertinent information from what I read that way, but in this book you have to read and re-read and back track in order to find what's important in this labyrinth of words. It is ironic that a book for cognitive psychology could be so poorly outlined and so incredibly inarticulate. They cite so many random experiments, while rarely ever really having a point (other than that they had to fill up six hundred pages to cash in on this, I'm sure). I am a book lover and sometimes even enjoy reading textbooks but this is the most dry drag that I have ever had the torture to read for school, and that is not an exaggeration. There are so many run on sentences and I am very frustrated with this. There are only a few pictures and figures and they're sometimes hard to decipher and presented in the most dull ink... these archaic versions of sky blue, gray, black and white that probably saved them money to print and that's unimaginative tone makes me a little depressed. I can't believe it has a four star review, but only two people reviewed and one was commenting on the efficiency of the shipment and the other seemed pretty ambivalent anyway. I have spent a lot of time trying to give this book a chance but it's an embarrassment and a rip off.

Let me give you a few sentences as a brief example of some of the semantic issues I have with the book (as I stated before, I often had to re-read sentences ten times to understand what they meant). "The no-correction condition replicated the findings of Wolfe et. al. However, if participants were allowed to correct their mistakes, error rates were low and constant across prevalence conditions. We're not finished yet: in the latest volley in this empirical debate, Van Wert, Horowitz, and Wolfe (2009) ran the correction condition of Fleck and Mitroff (2007) with the Wolfe et. al (2005) displays, and found little effect of the correction option, replicating the basic result found by Wolfe, et. al. So, what's going on?". That is a good question Riegler and Riegler... what IS going on?? I often feel I am reading incoherent jargon when this book is open.
No wonder the publishers don't have a review button on their website.

I also would like to mention that for class I was required to buy an expensive online program to accompany the book and everyone in class had trouble accessing it and my teacher had a lot of frustration trying to deal with the supplementary material which she couldn't even access herself for the first few weeks. I personally talked to tech support and they just told me "to talk to my teacher" after waiting twenty six minutes (if my memory serves me) to speak to someone about my issue. Then they asked if they could help me with anything else but hung up literally two seconds later before I could proceed with another question regarding the issue.

If you are a teacher of cognitive psychology please choose another book for your students! Do your research and find a better option.
And if you are a student and have to read this, I'm sorry for you, hopefully it will cause you less distress than it has for me.

WORST PSYCH BOOK I HAVE EVER READ!!!!!

Allow me to begin by saying that i am a 4th year forensic psychology student at a private College in nyc, i am a student with a Gpa of 3.9. i have read and studied from many psychology books in the past 3 years however i have never came across a book which was written as poorly as this one!!!!! SIMPLY HORRIBLE, DIFFICULT, NOT HELPFUL IN ANYTHING AT ALL, THERE ARE PICTURES THAT ARE MAINLY GRAPHS WHICH ARE BLACK AND WHITE AND BASICALLY DO NOT HELP BUT MAINLY CONFUSE ME EVEN FURTHER. Chapter drag on without holing my attention for longer than 10 minutes, there are no fun facts that will motivate you to keep reading the book. I CANT STRESS THIS ENOUGH !!!!!!HORRIBLY, POORLY WRITTEN. Simply because of this book i lost all interest in the class !!!!!! Please do not waste your money on purchasing this book !!!! And to the authors i am beyond dissapointed and angry !!!! AWFUL JOB !!!!

2 weeks later: I am beyond frustrated by this poorly written book. Not only it was expensive and required by my professor, now i am basically facing buying yet another much more expensive book because obviously i want to learn and pass my cognitive psych class. Out of 130 people in my class, about 97 (research done by my professor on the book) is buying a new book just because they cant understand what Riegler is talking about, Cognitive psych is not an easy class, and this book makes it even harder. I really dont like writing reviews but i had to write this to let other students know to STAY AWAY FROM THIS TEXT BOOK, or you will be spending ADDITIONAL 200+ on yet anothoer text book.

I hope that Riegler and Riegler can both read my reviews and know how frustrating it is when you pay so much money for a book so poorly and incoherently written. THE WORST TEXT BOOK I HAVE EVER PURCHASED !!!!!

When I ordered the book, I assumed that because it was a new book that it would have come with a code to access the publishers website for the mypsych.lab portion of the course. I did not realize that they were sold separately with an additional cost. The book arrived on time and my only dissapointment was the fact that I did not read the description closely enough to realize the non-bundled issue. I did contact the sender and it was at that time that I was informed that the two items did not come together.

Carpenter, who is affiliated with the Denver Museum of Natural History, previously edited a collection of scholarly papers on this same topic (Dinosaur Eggs and Babies, Cambridge Univ., 1994). This time he has a little fun--or at least what scientists would consider fun--with his subject: he indulges in fanciful speculation about dinosaur courtship, sexual behavior, nesting, egg laying, and infancy. "Face it," he writes in Chapter 5, "having gotten this far, you want to know how a pair of three-ton Stegosaurus did it--probably like porcupines: very carefully." Drawing from what we know about the mating and reproductive behavior of living birds and reptiles, from detailed knowledge of the physiology and development of eggs, and from slim fossil evidence, he imagines the sex lives of dinosaurs. Thorough illustrations range from hypothetical dinosaur courtship dances to detailed scientific diagrams of how eggshells form. Admittedly, most of his speculations cannot be verified. Still, this is a brilliant combination of imagination and science--and one of the best popular science books of the year. For public and academic libraries. WHAT MOTHER NEVER TOLD YOU ABOUT DINOSAUR REPRODUCTION!

The book is not written for dinosaur loving children. A background in general science, anatomy, biology, and/or zoology would be useful in understanding the astonishing wealth of information contained. That should not scare inquirers away from this opus magnus. Furthermore, Carpenter's occassional tongue-in-cheek humor imparts a very special flavor to the writing. In my mind,this beautiful volume would be worth the price just for its profusion of well-done illustrations, photos, and captions. But that's just icing on the cake. We learn the history of dinosaur egg finds, how one studies every detail of the egg fossil (wonderfully illustrated with photos and drawings), how the eggshell formed inside a dinosaur, by what means the dino embryo took in air and effectively expelled carbon-dioxide from within the eggshell, and even speculate on how the dino chick may have escaped the egg. Learn how to examine a dinosaur egg fragment and detect whether an embryo actually developed within it. Carpenter explains how dinosaur nests were built and 'designed' to incubate fertile eggs. Why is a baby dinosaur 'cute' by our perceptions, and possibly to its parents? Facts, photos, and paintings make the answer cuddlingly clear. Along with the abundance of superb black & white figures, illustrations, and photos, are over a dozen full-color plates, including ten life restorations by some of our most scientific and talented dinosaur artists. This volume is surely a treasure to those of us who seek a deeper insight into the mysteries of dinosaur life (and death). One such tantalizing mystery might be summed up as, "But how did dinosaurs DO IT?" Carpenter doesn't beg the question. He ventures into it with careful observations and analysis based on both behavior and form of contemporary animals and known dinosaurian anatomy. The answers should prove reasonable to his scientific colleagues. So filled is this book with interesting items that one could almost say there's something for everybody. On the far side, imagine some 'Good Old Boy' that doesn't 'give a hang' about science, picking the book up to brouse the strikingly beautiful dinosaur life illustrations. "Wow!" he croaks, "Forget about Tyrannosaurus rex! It's 'CARNOTAURUS SEX!'" [The reference is to an utterly dramatic and highly colorful life restoration by artist Luis V. Rey, revealing an imposimg Carnotaurus pair 'going at it' while their thunderous groans of ecstacy freak out the Mesozoic neighborhood! Startled by those sounds, a flock of at least 40 winged reptiles (Pterosaurs) bolts skyward from the ground. The dinosaur couple copulates, transfixed, among appropriately phallic plants. Some will buy the book just for that one startling scene. Yet, it is far more valuable as an adventure in learning, including its very thoughtful discourse on dinosaur intercourse. A scientific adventure. A 'Calvin and Hobbes' day-dream? For real. Get it.

A Dinosaur "Tour de Force".

If you're a serious "Dino-geek", like me, then Eggs, Nest, and Baby Dinosaurs may be just the book for you. Author, Paleontologist, Kenneth Carpenter has written an in depth treatment of Dinosaur reproduction in an ancient world. While accessible to the interested layperson the book seems to be directed primarily towards the professional and student reader who are comfortable with technical terminology, anatomical details and a little (very little!) statistical mathematics. Not to worry though, Dr Carpenter will help you through these difficulties. His writing is clear and "reader-friendly" with a bit of added humor ( How do Stegosaurs make love? Very carefully! ). Technically, some of the subjects followed are; How do you name a dinosaur? Where do you find dinosaur eggs and nests? I had no idea that an egg was so complex, different parts and multiple layers all working in unison for the support and benefit of the embryo. Also the nest and the nest-site are just as vital for the baby's survival. Is the nest too wet or too dry? Is there too much vegetation or not enough? The wrong temperature, too high or low, can drastically change the outcome and could even be fatal for the embryo. Like bowls of porridge the temperature needs to be "just right" and it's up to the parent to manage that problem. Using modern day animals as models, scientist are able to speculate on how dinosaurs went about "bringing up baby". These ideas are not just idle musings on a spring day but are based on a solid foundation of knowledge derived from fossil evidence, established facts on extant animals, and the work of countless paleontologist the world over. Tracing the evolution of vertebrate reproduction from earliest times to today the author discuses how dinosaurs played at the "the mating game", picked a nesting ground and constructed the nest. At times this book can be very technical; the anatomy of both the egg and the embryo; how a scientist goes about studying the fossil egg and the importance of parental care ( or lack of ) for the survival of the nestling. The book closes with a look at the infamous KT extinction event and a few of the many suggested causes; gender imbalance, changes in the environment, possible imbalance of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the atmosphere. Did predatory mammals or small dinosaurs play a part in the extinction? And how about eggshell thickness ( too thick or too thin )? The list is very long and for the most part not supported by much evidence, but all pertain directly to dinosaur eggs and babies. Of special note are extensive volcanic episodes covering thousands of miles and, of course, the astroid impact. Any Mass Extinction Theory must not only explain the extinction itself but also explain the organisms that survived: crocodiles and other reptiles for example. Why did some birds make it through while others perished?And, most importantly, frogs and other amphibians, If things were as bad as some of the "dooms day" scenarios have it then there wouldn't be any of these soft bodied vertebrates around today. Carpenter covers all of these issues and more in thoroughly engrossing manner. The book is extensively illustrated with numerous charts and graphs and art work by various artist like Gregory Paul and Luis Rey. Archival and new photos along with SEM images of fossils. As a bonus there is also several pages of color plates depicting working scientist, fossil sites and famous paintings of dinosaurs. All in all a great book for anyone curious about life and death in the Age of Dinosaurs.
