Quite Good But Not Worth Hundreds of Dollars

I bought this retail when it was new. It's quite a good reference work, with some information derived directly from personal correspondence with the artists. However, the ridiculous prices being asked by used book sellers, both here and on a popular auction site, are not warranted, especially considering that there is a quite good scholarly work available from McFarland for $100 in hardback that includes more up-to-date information: The Art of Japanese Cloisonne Enamel: History, Techniques and Artists, 1600 to the Present. Unless you collect fine editions of works on Asian art, I would suggest you spend your money elsewhere.

Cloisonne illustrated history

I read this book from front to back. The colored picture plates were exceptional. The authors excellent understanding of the subject made reading easy. I learned much from this document. I must add however, the price... does it really have to be that expensive? The book on Cloisonne by Gardner is superior.

About the Author
Jessie Penn–Lewis (1861–1927) was an evangelist and author from England. Evan Roberts, who was instrumental in the Welsh revival in the early 1900s, stayed with Mrs. Penn–Lewis and her husband, William, for a time. Mrs. Penn–Lewis had been an eyewitness to the revival. Her book War on the Saints (the updated edition is now titled Secrets of Spiritual Warfare), which Roberts contributed to, was written to counter what she perceived as the excesses of the revival and the deceptions of Satan at work to prevent the true work of God in awakening. War on the Saints is considered a textbook on spiritual warfare by many Christians. Mrs. Penn–Lewis also established and edited the periodical The Overcomer.

Dennis Bennett--in his book 'Trinity of Man'--claimed that Nee's books were pioneering in this field, interesting considering his books were based on Lewis'.

With "IT Infrastructure Architecture - Infrastructure building blocks and concepts", Sjaak Laan provides a broad and coherent picture of IT-infrastructure. The book presents an -introduction- to this subject; (technical) details only occasionally come into play. According to Laan a book covering the full width of the domain does not exist yet. He also states that his book is well suited to explain the interests as well as the complexity of the field of IT-infrastructure.

The author introduces his "Infrastructure Model" in chapter 1. This model is used to structure the remainder of the book. The book can be divided into two parts: a quality part and an concrete part. The quality part (chapter 2 - 5) discusses the concepts Availability, Performance and Security with respect to IT-infrastructure as a whole. Per building block (as of chapter 6) the author systematically focuses on historical developments, constituent parts and details of the applicable quality notions (Availability, Performance and Security).

Laan doesn't justify the correctness, completeness etc. of his Infrastructure Model. The same goes more than once for the constituent parts of the building blocks he discusses. And that is a pity, for that would further increase the power of his book.

The book is pleasantly ordered and reads easy. It contains a whole load of orienting information and can sure be used, in my opinion, as a reference work. The accessibility of the book leaves room for improvement: chapters/paragraphs are not numbered and organising/structuring text fragments are missing several times.

Summarising: Laan's first book, "IT Infrastructure Architecture", is an asset and a must for everyone who wants to (re)orient on the subject without being swamped by numerous details and technicalities.

3 stars if you are an exec just wanting a IA 101 else its a 2 star

It is structured well at the highest level following the typical layers network, servers, app etc. Then each section has some information about components under the section. The real thing that devalues the contents is he runs through a history lesson of each layer. For example, in the servers the book spends far to much time talking about old technology VAX, Apple II. This is a pretty obvious attempt to add filler. What should be in this book is how modern IA is done. Examples of IA at a typical multinational corporation. Instead history. The information in my view cursory much in the way a wiki might detail the topics. Matter of fact the publicly available wikis might be better. If your a deep expert in this area looking for a reference with good case stuidies it is definitely not you. However, if you are a manager or executive looking for IA 101 and what a good history lesson so you can be competent at discuss VAX and Apple II's over dinner with the hot date, it might due. I would suggest the author take this book back and fill it out with modern details on how to design IA with substantially modern components. Leave the history lessons for the Wikis, thats why people are paying for the book. History is easy, designing a major corporations IT infrasturre is not and that why you write a book and charge for it.

the word ARCHITECTURE in title is missused!

I decided to read this book because the author comes across as a very knoledgeable, experienced individual. Reading along, I realize he wrote a book that gives a very vague, simple overview in all verticals of technology. It seems to me like he tried to put everything he knows about technology in a book for an Information Technology intoductory course for college.

There is only one item that mentions architecture, the layers of varying systems and environments and how they depend on each other. Everything else was known, basic information for me.

If you are a seasoned professional looking for architecture information, this will not provide architecture. Instead, a glorified history and review or information technology.

With all due respect to the author, I consider Architecture to be an advanced topic, and material here should help one understand how to build whole systems and best prectice, review use cases, etc., not teach the basics.

About the Author
Grace H. Kim, AIA, is a principal and co-founder of Schemata Workshop, an architectural collaborative in Seattle. Kim received her bachelor of architecture with a minor in business from Washington State University, and had previously worked in practice at Skidmore, Owings and Merrill in Chicago, Bumgardner Architects in Seattle, and as principal at Place Architects in Seattle. For two years, Kim was university education coordinator at the International Masonry Institute, where she developed masonry education programs for architecture students. As a member of the AIA Mentorship Task Group, she spearheaded efforts to create a national AIA mentorship website, entitled "Mentorship: a Journey in Collaborative Learning." In 2004, Kim was the first recipient of the AIA NAC/YAF Emerging Professionals Mentorship Award.

A Standard of Quality

When we launched a new course, IDP Registration, and made it a requirement for graduation I was suddenly a mentor to 160 students and as the program rolled out that number increased annually. Students are automatically registered for the course in the first semester of their junior year and then they enter a cooperative work sequence which enables them to begin earning IDP credit. In order to distribute the advising load amongst the faculty members our department head held a special meeting of the Architecture faculty and I did a presentation of IDP Coordinators Boot Camp. At the end of the presentation each person was given a copy of The Survival Guide to Architectural Internship And Career Development by Grace H. Kim and instructed to use it as the standard for advising students. Today we have well over 500 students both within the program and recent graduates who come to us for counseling. When we add new faculty I still give them an orientation and a copy of the book so that we maintain that standard of quality.

I wish Grace Kim's new book, The Survival Guide, had been around when I was a new college graduate. In those days, we had to navigate the job market and internship process on our own--the proverbial equivalent to the uphill, both ways, in the snow scenario. Now, no one has to endure that ordeal.

The book answers every conceivable question about internship, licensure, and beyond. It is a must read for soon-to-be graduates, interns in their first few years of practice, and those who haven't taken the ARE and find themselves in a perpetual state of internship, as well as those pursuing nontraditional careers. A first of its kind and a definitive reference, this book is not necessarily one to be read cover to cover. Rather, it is meant to serve as a guide throughout the beginning of one's career.

Topics include: finding a job in a fim that is right for you, IDP, ARE, professional practice and development, mentorship, nontraditional career paths, working abroad, and starting your own firm. Kim supplements her text with essays by interns from around the world, who provide first-hand accounts of their experiences. In addition, Kim includes helpful checklists and worksheets to aid in exploring one's personal career path. Tips are dispersed throughout the text--while often common sense, they are nonetheless helpful reminders. At the end of the book, Kim provides references and a comprehensive bibliography for further reading.

As a young practitioner--principal and cofounder of Schemata Workshop, an architectural collaborative in Seattle--Grace Kim is a former IDP coordinator and has mentored many interns. Her writing is colored by her experience and she takes an informal, candid approach. While no substitute for a real-life mentor, this book serves to fill in the gaps.

I attended a seminar at the 2006 AIA National Convention in Los Angeles presented by Grace Kim and Lee Waldrep, the author of Becoming an Architect: A Guide to Careers in Design. The seminar was conducted in a workshop format, allowing for interaction within smaller groups. Kim believes in the power of peer mentoring, as explained through her ladder metaphor:

"I'd like to share with you my ladder metaphor related to mentoring. If you can imagine a large ladder with all of us standing on rungs representing different stages in our architectural career, there is someone just ahead of you and others immediately behind you. But the gaps between the rungs may at times appear too distant and it may not be clear how you can advance to the next one. For each person these large gaps may appear at different points in their career. So no matter where you are in your career, you have the ability to be a mentor by sharing the knowledge you possess with those on the rung behind you. Reaching back to provide them a helpful hand to pull up to the next rung can make a big difference for them and a huge difference for the future of our profession. You may know this from a personal experience yourself. I would encourage you to keep this metaphor in mind as you progress through your career--I think you will find that mentorship will bring you many personal and professional rewards in ways that you'd never imagine by simply reaching back to help someone advance to the next rung."

The main thesis of the book is that colonialism left Africa on its own space wherein African leaders could have made a difference. By putting discrete perspectives into historical context, the book circumnavigates through comparative and comprehensive holistic approach to the Siad Barre regime to reveal how colonialism did not produce less than what criminalisation of the State resulted in Somalia. This empirical analysis is crucial to understanding the contemporary conundrum facing the Somali world today. The argument is that the contemporary conflicts are not only attributable to—but also because of—the past plunders of the post-colonial leaders trained by the departed colonial authorities. Employing nuanced analytic concepts and categories, the aim of the book is to refine the past to recapture the present and envision the future. Framing new ways of analyzing military regimes in Africa begins with (re)assessment of how the Siad Barre regime was previously approached. Marshalling extensive and extraordinary amount of sources, the book unveils the intricacies and contradictions of the dictatorship and its impact on the Somali psyche. The book locates the evolution of the regime within the wider context of the Cold War political contestation between the East and the West. Unparalleled in-depth and analysis, this book is the first full-length scholarly study of the Siad Barre regime systematically explaining the politics and process of the dictatorial rule. The historicity of exploring Somali State trajectory entails employing a Braudelian longue durée approach. Thus, three interrelated sets of contexts/questions inform the study: how Siad Barre himself came into power, how he ruled and maintained his authoritarian reign over the Somalis and who had assisted him from inside and outside the Somali world.

About the Author

Thomas E. Johnsen is Professor of Purchasing and Supply Management at Audencia Nantes School of Management, France. He is currently also Part-Time/Visiting Professor of Supply Chain Management at the University of Southern Denmark and serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management.

Mickey Howard is Associate Professor in Purchasing and Supply Chain Management at the University of Exeter Business School. His research investigates the implementation of supply strategy including service innovation, complex performance and sustainability. He is the co-author of Procuring Complex Performance: studies of product-service innovation, Routledge, NY.

Joe Miemczyk is Associate Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management, and Academic Director of the Masters in Supply Chain and Purchasing Management at Audencia Nantes School of Management, France. He is a member of CRET-LOG (Centre de REcherche sur le Transport et la LOGistique), Aix Marseille Univeristé. He worked in industry implementing Environmental Management Systems. About the Author
Kirk Warren Brown, PhD, is Associate Professor of Psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University. He studies the role of attention to and awareness of internal states and behavior, with a particular interest in mindfulness and mindfulness-based interventions. He has received fellowships from several foundations and from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Dr. Brown lectures widely across the United States and Europe and has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Paris.

J. David Creswell, PhD, is Associate Professor of Psychology at Carnegie Mellon University, where he conducts research on stress and coping, with a focus on pathways linking mindfulness meditation training with stress reduction and stress-related disease outcomes. He serves as an academic editor for the journal PLoS ONE. Dr. Creswell is a recipient of the American Psychological Association Distinguished Scientific Award for an Early Career Contribution to Psychology.

Ryan, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and Senior Research Professor at the Institute for Positive Psychology and Education at Australian Catholic University, with a secondary appointment at the University of Rochester. He is a codeveloper of self-determination theory, an internationally researched theory of human motivation and personality development. An honorary member of the German Psychological Society and the recipient of distinguished career awards from several societies, Dr. Ryan has been a Visiting Professor at the Max Planck Institute, the University of Bath, and Nanyang Technical University.

Well worth the money

An excellent resource, I am using it as my primary source of information to prepare for an international conference, as it is well-rounded, gives an orderly trip through the research, and presents both the science and the clinical findings for mindfulness practitioners in the medical and mental health professionals. A bargain at the price, highly recommended.

interesting History

I found this book very interesting and I came to understand more on earthquakes.
I remember reading of this quake in my local town newspaper (too poor for TV) wish I still did not have one most of the time.
Anyway, reading all the destruction and how people afterwards came together with such positive attitudes of "it could have been
worse"and looked to start rebuilding.
I also never knew Alaska was so prone to earthquakes even surpassing California!
I highly recommend this natural disaster history you will learn a lot of Alaska

Great read...definitely recommend

This is a really thorough and well written account of a remarkable natural disaster. Many first hand accounts make this a compelling read. I've travelled south from anchorage on numerous occasions past a large field of dead trees. I always thought the trees were killed by fire. I was shocked to learn the tsunami after the quake wiped them out.

I have long wondered what that day have might have like. And after a visit to Anchorage during the 50th anniversary, my interest had grown. This book gave me a clear idea of what those people had experienced. It was an interesting read.
