Valuable resource

I read Andrew's 85 reasons soon after arriving in Brazil and found it valuable while I was adjusting to Brazilian students.

He has a nice, clear format that points out a mistake, proves a context for it, then presents the correction.

In fact, I have seen almost every mistake in my classes with Brazilians. Definitely worth it if you are new to the Brazilian classroom or anticipating being in one, for sure.

Very useful tips for Portuguese speakers!

The author came up with some expressions and words that are a pain in the neck for us brazilians. Having a communication in English doesn't means that we're going to lose our accent or even talk like Queen Elizabeth II, however we're supposed to avoid misunderstandings and be clear as much as possible. These 85 tips are really useful! I can't recommend this book more!

Learning a second language can be very difficult, and you'll be surprised how often you end up using your first language "rules" in the language you're learning. This book has helped me to recognise some of the words I'd been using incorrectly and why I shouldn't be using them while keeping it simple and fun.

Good basic book for PMs

I really enjoy Fergus O'Connell's down to earth way of thinking. I am a PM and have been in the construction business for about 20 years and still get a lot of help from this book. A colleague of mine has it on his desk as his bible or reminder of what he should be doing. Not as in depth as some of the blocks of granite you can buy but still good enough to help you along.

This could well be my first 5-Star rating. This is an very good book and mostly don't read/listen to book twice but with this I did.

Overview:
This is a Project Management Intro book that clearly lets experienced Project Managers realize they got it all wrong with the basics.

What you should expect (the good part)
The way it was written and read (audiobook) makes this a delight to read without any flooding or information and junk.
No self-promotion by the author like other authors do.
Gives tips and note-like key points you can actually note down and apply
The principles in this book can be applied in any project
You can start applying the principles right away.
You dont need any prior knowledge to quickly grasp the key Project Management skills

The Audiobook:
The narator made the book even more enjoyable and I always love to listen to it
The naration was interesting and you actually learn the principles while easily listening

The Cons:
You will want more after you finish reading :D

I expected to hate the book and be lulled into a stupor

LIstened to the audiobook version of this and bought the physical edition to use as a reference. I expected to hate the book and be lulled into a stupor, yet I was very surprisingly pleased at the candor and humor with which O'Connell approaches the subject. I think anyone involved in projects (as a manager or participant or stakeholder) can benefit from a quick go-through of this book, and I will be using terms and vocabulary from the book in my management - particularly "suck it up"

Custom SharePoint Solutions - the book teaches you how to do it, if you have some JS knowledge in advance

I am a blogger, writing reviews about IT books, IT articles and anything I find interesting. I have received the book "Custom SharePoint Solutions with HTML and JS" from the publisher Apress.Com for a review, upon a request of my site.


The book is rather easy to read, starting with using of SharePoint browser based tools. The first chapter is about setting environments, tools and etc. From special "payed" software you need SharePoint and Visual Studio Express (The Express version is free, if that matters). The later chapters cover building own SharePoint parts with jQuery, AJAX, HTML, CSS, JS. The DOM model of JS explained in one chapter pretty well and the REST API is in the last one. The explanations are made with lots of screenshots and text. What I liked was the fact that almost all of the source code of the book was made available for anyone in the Apress.Com site and the step by step approach with explanations.
Prerequisite knowledge - you should understand HTML and JS to make the most of the book, it really describes the JS and HTML code, but not for an absolute beginner in the subject.

A small minus (which can possibly be not a minus at all) - Sometimes the screenshots go too much into detail, e.g. a picture for creating a new file in Visual Studio or copying a link location, but in general they are ok and quite informative.

Pretty much that is my review. The book is informative and well written, if you follow it you would be able to customize a SharePoint site. Thus, I would give it five stars.

This book helped me a lot in learning how to work with HTML & JS in SharePoint. I'd definitely recommend it, and I've not really seen any books out there that cover the same topic with specificity and relevance.

Introductory material, somewhat disappointing

This book is a very beginner friendly introduction to SharePoint customization using JavaScript, but not much more. I was hoping for something slightly more advanced. This is the book I wish I had read before simply traversing all the (free) material on TechNet concerning JSOM.

I wouldn't rightly call any of the actual examples you'll see in this book as real "custom solutions" for SharePoint, but rather a beginner's introduction to create simple pages for performing basic operations using JavaScript in SharePoint 2013.

I'm sorry to say I did not learn much new from this book after having already gone through all the free material from Microsoft, which is honestly quite good and has a lot of code examples.

Nice and Steady all the way through

Rudolph Honsey has written a book with qualities that can best be seen when comparing it to another Commentary (in this case, John Gibson's commentary on Job--see my review of that for more details). While Gibson gives a wild roller-coaster of a commentary, Honsey gives a steady, traditional train ride. While Gibson shocked me, thrilled me, and made me wildly angry, Honsey made cool, logical sense the entire way through.
Honsey, being of the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, advances many views that I've known and loved for years, namely 1) The events in the Book of Job really happened 2) Job (as well as the entire Old Testament) point forward to the coming of Jesus 3) If his research doesn't provide him with an adequate answer, he admits it. 4) The entire Bible (even the speeches of Elihu) is inspired by God and there for a purpose. That is to say, if the Bible said it happened, it happened; mere, silly humans are blasphemous when they begin to say "this particular part of the Bible really shouldn't be there."
As such, Honsey, produces a calm, logical commentary. When he sees something that points forward to Jesus (or some other part of the Bible), he points it out; when Job says something that borderlines blasphemy, he give Job the benefit of the doubt (God commended him for his righteousness so Honsey won't accuse where God doesn't); he explains his thinking and why he disagrees with other Bible commentators.
In all, Honsey gives a clear, accurate picture of the book of Job. While being neither dramatic nor flashy, he does earn points with straight-forwardness. While not a particularly gifted poet in the sense that he can point out the highly emotional yet difficult-to-comprehend poetry of Job, he is gifted in presenting Job as a part of a greater whole--the Holy Bible. A heartily endorsed commentary (and commentary series).

I am using it in a Bible study and appreciate its recognition that even the speeches of Job's "friends" were put in the Bible for a reason. I think his understanding of Job even when he questions God is good.

there's just one little thing

if you have bought lyford's book, _quill and beadwork of the western sioux_, you already have this book.
yes, its a wonderful resource--i thought so when i bought i under its original title. i thought this book, with the different title, would expand upon the other.
as long as you keep this information in mind, and only buy the book once under either title, you will be rewarded. since it was originally published by the government in 1940, there are no color plates, which is a great shame. however, some of the historic photos are worth the price of the book.
the instructions for both quill and beadwork are very good. there is a section that briefly analyzes design elements, very useful for creating your own designs.
i just wish i had known i already owned it under another title.

An old skill

I always loved the beadwork on Indian clothing and I always wanted to try it. It is much harder than it looks and takes all the patience you have in the beginning. The method is called "Lazy squaw" and involves applying small lines of beads, usually the fewer the better, to be sure the beads stay stitched down and the beads on the finished piece stay even and flat. (And there is nothing lazy about it.) Tne patterns in the book are easy to follow and variations are easy to create. If you can still find a form of graph paper where there are actual oval bead shapes in rows, patterns are incredibly easy to make. You can make the long strips used on the sleeves and leggings by loom and they look good but the women who perfected the craft never had them. If you get really ambitious and want to bead moccasins or a dress, looms won't do for them. The book does give a history which is very interesting. I enjoy the book and would recommend it for those seriously wishing to try it. Just be aware that seed beads are called that for their tiny size and they can go everywhere. Still it is an enjoyable craft and the results are both impressive and satisfying. Just don't get too ambitious for your first project and you will do more.
