Who was Lucy, Aside from the contents in blurb.

First, I am not knocking the author's work. I'm Only stating why it didn't work for me. I liked the story summary, which is why I chose the book. And the cover is alluring. However, there is No chapter identification here which gave the impression of reading a paper instead of a novel. There was no clear picture of what the lead wanted. The character development was minimal at best. I just didn't connect with the characters. The writing didn't move along and there were too many repeated words. " Lucy couldn't see Ophelia pout, but she could swear she could hear it." Maybe not the best example, but there's plenty more. For me there was no meaningful dialogue which seemed to drag the story along. Even when it was clear who was speaking, in three consecutive pages of dialogue between the lead characters the conversation lines ended with "he said, she said." The author didn't bother with giving the father a name, well at 19% of the way you know for sure that their last name is Johnson. I'm trying to be constructive here but there are just some basic things as a reader I want to know and names are one of them. If they are worth mentioning they should have a name. I had to read great deal of the book to know what city the story takes place in. Anyway, this is my first time reading this author, so I'll try another book and I like it more.

Fabulous!!

I'm still reading the book, but so far it's been entertaining. I did find a little problem, one is with the bodyguard Jason. Sometimes it is written James instead. And second, twice part of the story was repeated, not much but still repeated. I checked on my kindle fire and fire phone, it's the same on both. Other than that it's a great book.

Nice book, but needs editing

I liked the book and the character was sweet. Not so deep or developed, but okay. Just would have liked if the author could keep the names straight, the H changed last name three times and one time the h thought about the H but used the bad guy's name...

Engaging dramatic plot, but doesn't fit with the period

Charlotte Ribard, whose world has just fallen apart, takes out her feelings of betrayal on Francis Storbridge, her father's former secretary and her one-time friend. He had come to help her when she was lost and alone and devastated; she assumed that he was tarred with the same brush as her villainous, murdering father.
Five years later, Francis is an MP and in a position of some influence, and Charlotte desperately needs his help. Since he had been in love with her for years anyway, his pride led him to state - as a challenge - that the price of his assistance was marriage to her. He never expected that she'd agree, but she did, so they marry, a marriage of convenience in which Charlotte doesn't trust Francis one bit and his pride won't allow him to tell her the truth about himself.
Into this relationship add the return of Charlotte's father, who now wants to plot to ruin Storbridge for his failure to support his plan for a new railway. This leads us into the political sub-plot of the book. Unlike the last reviewer, I enjoyed this very much and it was, in fact, the best-researched and most entertaining part of the book. One minor criticism at this point is that there were rather too many characters to keep track of; admittedly, some of them were from previous books in the series, but I had not read those previous books (both now out of print), and had to keep reminding myself of who these people were and what their relationship was to the protagonists.
I have very mixed feelings about this book. While I enjoyed the political sub-plot, I found it very difficult to concentrate on the romance and the personal interaction between the characters, because quite simply very few of these characters belonged anywhere but in the present day. The dialogue was far too modern for the period. Now, while I don't expect writers to stuff their dialogue with obselete words, neither do I expect to see contractions all over the place and modern expressions used. At one point, Charlotte even says 'bloody hell'; now, while it's just possible that a gentleman of that period would use such an expression, a lady would never have done so.
Period behaviour is also very much lacking - I was incredulous to see Francis' young sisters-in-law (aged 17 and 11) talking openly about mistresses, and to him as well. If young unmarried girls even knew of the existence of such a thing as mistresses - and they usually didn't - they would never dream of mentioning this in front of adults. Serena, who is 11, was treated as if she was at least 17, both in her conversation and in the way she was allowed to stay up late, join the adults at dinner (even formal dinners, which would be unheard of) and at the theatre.
Grant's male characters also treated the women in a way which, although common nowadays, was completely unheard of two hundred years ago. No man ever discussed anything of any importance with his wife or daughters if he could avoid it; the idea that Francis, Paul, Silverton and Robert would involve their wives in their planning is ridiculous for the period.
And finally, a two-year-old being able to pronounce 'explosion' perfectly and know what the word means?! Please!
While there were parts of this book I enjoyed, I was jolted out of the story by historical impossibilities far too often for me to read anything else by Tracy Grant.

Short and to the point - just how advertising should be! This book is easy to read. The photo examples made it easy to differentiate the various types of ads. On my next road trip, I will be analyzing all of the billboards and will easily recall which type of ad is being displayed. I highly recommend this book to any small business that needs some help with their advertising.

Not just for Gourmets

Don't be put off by the dour photo on the cover. MFK Fisher has a lively wit and a breezy style of writing that is a joy to read. In this book she takes on topics based on the alphabet. In dining Alone, she describes the difficulty of being a food writer. She is never invited to her friend's because they think their cooking isn't good enough, so instead she goes home to a lonely supper of canned soup and crackers. The chapter on Bachelors describes a meal that on the surface is dreadfull but is made delightful due to the care and effort of the gentleman to provide hospitality to his guest. Every chapter is full of charm and the recipes are quite good. A very enjoyable book.

Particularly enjoyable for her rather obscure selection of an alphabet by which to write about food. If you want more, I recommend the compendium The Art of Eating, by the same author. This woman really enjoyed food, even the simplest meal, which might even be eaten alone and enjoyed more for the experience.

David Avison is Distinguished Professor of Information Systems at ESSEC Business School, near Paris, France after being Professor at the School of Management at Southampton University for nine years. He has also held posts at Brunel and Aston Universities in England, and the University of Technology Sydney and University of New South Wales in Australia, and elsewhere. He is President-elect of the Association of Information Systems (AIS). He is joint editor of Blackwell Science's Information Systems Journal now in its eighteenth volume, rated as a 'core' international journal. So far, twenty-five books are to his credit including the fourth edition of the well-used text Information Systems Development: Methodologies, Techniques and Tools (jointly authored with Guy Fitzgerald). He has published a large number of research papers in learned journals, edited texts and conference papers. He was Chair of the International Federation of Information Processing (IFIP) 8.2 group on the impact of IS/IT on organisations and society and is now vice chair of IFIP technical committee 8. He was past President of the UK Academy for Information Systems and also chair of the UK Heads and Professors of IS and is presently member of the IS Senior Scholars Forum. He was joint programme chair of the International Conference in Information Systems (ICIS) in Las Vegas (previously also research programme stream chair at ICIS Atlanta), joint programme chair of IFIP TC8 conference at Santiago Chile, programme chair of the IFIPWG8.2 conference in Amsterdam, panels chair for the European Conference in Information Systems at Copenhagen and publicity chair for the entity-relationship conference in Paris and chair of several other UK and European conferences. Taking inspiration from the brain structure (neurons), linguistic rather than precise way of description by humans (not so cold, very warm), genetics and the behaviour of birds and ants in the nature, new techniques for the solution of various problems have been developed over the past three decades or so. All these techniques are broadly classified as artificial intelligence or computational intelligence.

Artificial intelligence encompasses methods like artificial neural networks and fuzzy logic. Computational intelligence includes optimization methods such as genetic algorithm, evolutionary algorithm, arts colony, particle swarm optimization, etc. and their variations. Feasibility of the application of these techniques in various control and optimization problems has been investigated extensively and these techniques have been applied to physical systems in a number of cases.

With the computational power now available, importance of this relatively new branch of knowledge, that is heavily dependent on soft computing, will grow significantly in the future. The appearance of a book like this one helps spread awareness about the new techniques based on soft computing and is thus a welcome addition.

About the Author
Peter Ladefoged, UCLA Research Phonetician and Professor of Phonetics Emeritus, was Director of the UCLA Phonetics Laboratory from 1962 to 1991.
