About the Author

Joe O'Mahoney is Senior Lecturer at Cardiff Business School and a Fellow of the CIPD. Prior to this he was Lecturer in Organization and Technology at Lancaster University. Joe has held a number of positions in industry including the role of Senior Business Consultant at 3G Mobile where he was involved with the start up of the company. Joe was also Director and Co-founder of Stay Mobile, Technology Ltd, a company that develops and leases a product for recharging mobile phones in public places. Joe's areas of expertise are change management and consultancy, including innovation and entrepreneurship, cultural change, new product development, and systems design.


Calvert Markham is the Managing Director of Elevation Learning, the leading educator of consultancy practitioners and Visiting Professor in the Practice of Management Consultancy at Cass Business School. Calvert has held the post of President of the Institute of Consulting and Vice Chairman of the global consultancy institute, the ICMCI. He has authored several books on the consultancy industry, with a specific interest in practitioner skills and is a visiting professor at Cass Business School.

Born in Brooklyn, New York of Bajan descent, Roger Smith struggled through his teens and twenties with considering himself as a poet. His poetry has been published in the Molloy College Literary Magazine, and he has performed at various venues in New York City and plans on continuing to share his gift with the world through being what God has made him, a poet.

Two old friends set out for a weeklong romp through Santa Ynez, Calif., wine country that comically strains their friendship in Pickett's lively debut. Smart, hapless narrator Miles is divorced and broke, and his novel's been rejected all over town. His handsome, "ursine" best friend, Jack, a successful actor, is about to get married, and wants to enjoy a few last days of freedom. Pickett gleefully chronicles their many minor adventures, including the oversexed Jack's attempts at getting laid, a boar-hunting episode and a staged car accident. Add to that massive amounts of wine: oenophile Miles swills rather than sips, and Jack's always been a party guy. While Jack works his charm on the ladies, Miles has his own flirtation with a lovely waitress. Miles can be a delightful narrator, but he's no prince: he's a bore when it comes to wine, for example, and he can get a little pseudophilosophical ("photos mock the present by staring back at us with their immutable luster of our youthful past"). He also thinks nothing of snatching a couple thousand dollars from his alcoholic mother on her birthday. But redemption for all is promised and Pickett takes his readers on a jolly ride. His novel sounds like a perfect buddy flick, and indeed, it will have its chance: Alexander Payne (About Schmidt; Election) is directing it for Fox Searchlight.

Gotta love Miles

I hate to say this, but the movie was better. Paul Giamatti makes Miles a much more sympathetic character and you really feel that he is a good guy underneath his flaws. In the book Miles comes across as a narcissist who likes to intimidate friends with his vocabulary and pretensions. We already knew how he ripped off his mom and lied about other things, but at least the film version has you rooting for him because he is adorably down on his luck. Jack however, Jack is just the same. It is hard not to laugh at his antics and his down to earth base motives. Also the book has a "boar hunt" that did not need to be there, except to show the locals as gun-toting rednecks. Some of the names were changed in the film, and Jack's girlfriend does not have a daughter in the book. I also wanted to meet his annoying in-laws but they are only in the film version. Overall a good read but not one to make you love Miles.

The Book vs. The Movie

Traditionally, a book is better than the movie version -- notable exceptions include "Field of Dreams," "Ordinary People," and "The Horse Whisperer." But now, finally having read this book and seen the movie multiple times, I vote for the movie, while giving enormous credit to Rex Pickett.

Having read the book, one must wonder about some of the choices made in the movie -- why, for example was Miles moved to San Diego for home base and why does Maya vanish for more than the last half hour of the movie? We all know the most famous line from the movie about f***king Merlot, but in the movie, the line just seems to drop out of nowhere. As Pickett writes throughout the book, Miles is so anti-Merlot and it's explained why -- we're not surprised when he gives the line in the book. I also like the fact that the novel gives context to the term "Sideways" and has Miles saying goodbye to Jack in Paso Robles, a moment lost in the movie.

As I said, give Pickett credit because the major plot points in the movie are mostly originally established in the novel. But the idea that Jack would have to pay Maya to have sex with Miles seemed silly and the whole subplot with Brad and wild boar hunting seemed irrelevant. A good book editor would have slashed this novel by at least 50 to 75 pages and made it tighter. Way too long.

I give Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor enormous credit for taking the great parts of this story and making them ring true emotionally. They truly deserved the Oscar for Best Screenplay. Replacing "Terra" with "Stephanie," replacing her shotgun with a motorcycle helmet, making Maya into a more complete person, including that lovely monologue about wine. They also put things in the proper sequence.

So the novel is more a curiosity piece to me and I suggest any aspiring screenwriter buy the book and see the movie. I would have loved to been the fly on the wall and seen/heard Rex Pickett's reaction the first time he either read the script or saw a preview. Different worlds.

Fun for wine lovers

For anyone who enjoyed the movie, this is a must read. The book begins with a hysterical wine tasting that should have made it to the movie, but didn't, and the ending was far more satisfying than the one in the book. Pour yourself a glass of wine--preferably not merlot--and enjoy!

I have read a lot of Stephan Schiffman's books. This one is a great guide for keeping you focused on what really matters - getting the sale (or at least the next action). The points flow nicely, and you will learn a lot in a short period of time.

Great Insights Into Getting Meetings With Decision Makers

Most salespeople know just what to do when they get in front of a decision maker who has a need. But most salespeople spend too little time with new decision makers. The salespeople either put too little effort into prospecting, or stay focused on cold leads much too long. Stephan Schiffman takes dead aim at that problem and provides ways to motivate you to take an more energetic approach, to implement a system to help you get there, and to keep you perservering until results occur.
Although there was much good advice in the book, I thought that his descriptions of the psychology of exploring over the telephone setting up a face-to-face meeting was masterful. The book deserves five stars for that section alone!
Basically, he wants you to realize that every objection to having a meeting that you will ever get will come in one of only about a dozen forms. If you think about these objections, you can create a response for each that leads naturally back to your question, 'Are you free to meet with me at 2 p.m. on Wednesday?' He provides a number of useful examples that he uses in his training business to help stimulate your imagination.
I also thought that his advice to leave voice mails where you offer to tell the prospect something important about a well-known company (that happens to be your customer and has agreed to be a reference) is likely to make it easier to make the initial telephone contact.
Depending on the type of customer you deal with, you may need to soften or harden the method he describes, but the basic concept of being focused on getting the meeting first is a very good one. By asking people to commit to action, you tell whether you are creating a live relationship or not. If not, ask 'why not?' and learn something. The book basically turns what most think of as rejection into progress. I thought that was a great way to turn around stalled thinking about selling.
After you have finished the book, ask yourself what other requirements you have in order to make progress in what is important to you. Then consider whether you are making enough progress in those areas. If not, create a system and set of self-motivations to assist you in implementing that system. You should be able to make vastly more progress as a result.

This book brings the history of the cold war to life. I don't think that Americans appreciate how our country and current events are so deeply attached to things that have occurred in the world in the past. This book brings back a war that so many Americans have forgotten, but my family has experienced first hand. The circumstances in the Little Toy Dog continue to influence the decisions that we make as a country and as a family today. There are still many "hot spots" around our globe that fight against a lack of freedom that these brave men in my Dad's squadron gave their lives for.

I was blessed. My Dad came back. Four of these men did not come back. The two survivors, my Dad and Capt Olmstead, returned but their lives and their family's lives have been forever affected by this tragedy. I pray for the children and grandchildren of those fathers that did not return.

Too many Americans today do not appreciate the sacrifices that have been made for them. But, oh! Wait a minute! There are people who know about the sacrifices I am talking about- the families and personnel of our active and retired American Armed Forces.

380th b47 bomber wing 1960

I was in the 380th B47 bomber wing in 1960. Colonel Mckone and Colonel Olmstead are still alive and kicking nearly 50 years after their shoot down near Russia. Colonel Olmstead suggested that I go on line and buy the book. I too was born in 1935, so the era was my prime. I'm still reading the book, about 3/4 ways through. I'm going to go finish it right now. Very good reading. Mckone and Olmstead lost friends in the shoot down and I am sure the incident and their lost friends are still fresh in their minds, like it happened yesterday. These two men were in a cold war, that was very hot to them. Their rb47 type was the only b47 that saw any combat. More than one rb47 was shoot up and made it back. The b-47 was one of the great air planes. Maybe not the most comfortable. Read the book, you'll learn something of our great history.

This isn't the same book I already had. I wanted the same book for a gift to someone and the poems in this book are different from the poems in my book.

Poets, Be Aware!

My name is Karen Ter-Sarkisian. My poet SOLITUDE is on the first page of MY copy of the book. After receiving The Colors of Life I was proud for a while. I thought since my poem was on the very first page, it was the best, or one of the best poems in the collection. Until I found out the truth: every poet has his or her poem on the first page of their copy(s). This is a trick: making you to believe that you are the best in order to make you send more poems, spend more money. Vanity Publication-that how it is called. To pay in order to be published. Each participant poet must pay $49.99 for their copy which regularly would be no more than $15 retail price. Vanity publications don't have any value for our career as poets. Now, if someone is willing to pay couple of dollars (no more than that) to purchase this book, go ahead, there are some really good poems, but also really bad ones as well.

Great compliation!

I don't read much poetry, but someone very close to me wrote a wonderful poem that happened to end up in this book. So of course, I automatically love it! But, I also found many other interesting, and varied, poems while browsing through the rest of it. It is a fun collection written by a wide range of people - some professional writers, others who just write on the side. All in all, a charming book, and I love it! I'm glad they printed this.
