Authors Hirsch and Van Haften persuasively argue, for the first time, that it was Lincoln's in-depth study of geometry that gave our sixteenth president his verbal structure. Although Lincoln's fascination with geometry is well documented, most historians have concluded that his study of the subject was little more than mental calisthenics. In fact, conclude the authors, Lincoln embedded the ancient structure of geometric proof into the Gettysburg Address, the Cooper Union speech, the First and Second Inaugurals, his legal practice, and much of his substantive post-1853 communication.

Modern science can be traced back to Greek geometric method, but rhetoric, which morphed into speech and then into communications, has barely advanced since Aristotle. Lincoln's structure emancipates speech from Aristotle and unleashes limitless possibilities. Indeed, his use of geometric method in rhetoric and writing has long been a secret hiding in plain sight. Virtually any literate person can become an Abraham Lincoln by structuring speech with iron logic, as aptly demonstrated by this remarkable new study.

Among other things, the authors artfully demonstrate the real importance of the Cooper Union speech (which helped make Lincoln president), offer a startling revelation about the Declaration of Independence that connects Lincoln to Thomas Jefferson more closely than anyone previously realized, and show how the structure of the legal system played an even more important role in Lincoln's greatness than heretofore realized.

With the publication of Abraham Lincoln and the Structure of Reason, Lincoln immediately takes on a new importance that will open an entirely new avenue of scholarly study.

About the Authors: David Hirsch is an attorney in Des Moines, Iowa. He has a BS from Michigan State University and a JD, with distinction, from the University of Iowa College of Law. He clerked for an Iowa Supreme Court Justice from 1973-1974. Hirsch co-authored the technology column for the American Bar Association Journal for over a decade. The idea for this book came from a column he co-authored for the ABA Journal in 2007.

Dan Van Haften lives in Batavia, Illinois. He has BS, with high honor, and MS degrees in mathematics from Michigan State University, and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology. He began his career with ATandT Bell Laboratories in 1970, and retired from Alcatel-Lucent in 2007. His work involved software development and system testing on telecommunication systems.

Enunciation, 2. Exposition, 3. Specification, 4. Construction, 5. Proof, and 6. Conclusion. The Enunciation contains a Given and a Sought. A fascinating read!

Abraham Lincoln and the Structure of Reason is a comprehensive study of how Lincoln developed his command of logic, reason and argument both as an attorney and political giant. I always thought Lincoln, like many politicians, had an innate ability to communicate ideas. The book contends that such skills can be learned. Portions of the book require deep thought regarding the mathematical concepts needed to understand Lincoln's approach, but the authors effectively break the materials into reasonable portions. As a litigation attorney, I really appreciated the historical detail of practicing law in the mid-1800's and would highly recommend the book to other attorneys, especially younger attorneys who wish to understand the roots of the profession and how to develop the timeless art of persuasion from one of the best. A fascinating read.

What Did Lincoln Ask at Cooper Union?

In "Abraham Lincoln and the Structure of Reason," authors David Hirsch and Dan Van Haften write that Lincoln used Euclid's principles of geometry to structure many of his speeches, legal arguments, and writings. In Chapter 3, "Honest Abe?," they write that Lincoln misused Euclid in his 1860 speech at Cooper Union by misconstruing the votes cast by three of the Framers of the Constitution on the issue of the power of the federal government to control slavery in the federal territories.

The authors recite a long list of problems with Lincoln's arguments. The question mark after "Honest Abe" in the chapter's title seems to imply that he was less than honest. The authors make this implication explicit, over and over. Lincoln, they write, "confused the issue" and "stretched the math" (p. 48). He "finessed" the votes of three of the Framers (p. 50). He "employed a verbal shell game" by "overstating his conclusion" (p. 50). There was "weakness in Lincoln's argument" (p. 51). The genius of his speech was in "the skillful stretching of the context of the facts" (emphasis in original, p. 51). He "manufactured three votes" by giving them "a significance they did not have" (p. 51). He used "sleight of hand" (p. 53). Lincoln "slyly manipulated the counting" (p. 52). There was "carefully orchestrated equivocation" (p. 53). The facts Lincoln presented at Cooper Union were not in dispute, but the "stretch" he made was in "the legal effect of those undisputed facts" (p. 54). The authors suggest a possible violation of the American Bar Association's Model Rules of Professional Conduct.

Lincoln was not dishonest. The authors write that "the issue Lincoln addressed was whether the Constitution forbids the federal government from regulating slavery in the territories." But, in fact, Lincoln never posed the question in those words. The actual question he asked was, "Does the proper division of local from federal authority, or anything in the Constitution, forbid our Federal Government to control as to slavery in our Federal Territories?" (emphasis in original).

Lincoln answered his own question: "The sum of the whole is, that of our thirty-nine fathers who framed the original Constitution, twenty-one -- a clear majority of the whole -- certainly understood that no proper division of local from federal authority, nor any part of the Constitution, forbade the Federal Government to control slavery in the federal territories."

What were the votes of the three Framers that Lincoln supposedly "finessed"? The first was in 1784. Lincoln said that "three years before the Constitution -- the United States then owning the Northwestern Territory, and no other, the Congress of the Confederation had before them the question of prohibiting slavery in that Territory; and four of the 'thirty-nine' who afterward framed the Constitution, were in that Congress, and voted on that question. Of these, Roger Sherman, Thomas Mifflin, and Hugh Williamson voted for the prohibition, thus showing that, in their understanding, no line dividing local from federal authority, nor anything else, properly forbade the Federal Government to control as to slavery in federal territory."

On the second vote, Lincoln said that in 1787, "still before the Constitution, but while the Convention was in session framing it, and while the Northwestern Territory still was the only territory owned by the United States, the same question of prohibiting slavery in the territory again came before the Congress of the [Articles of] Confederation; and two more of the 'thirty-nine' who afterward signed the Constitution, were in that Congress, and voted on the question. They were William Blount and William Few; and they both voted for the prohibition -- thus showing that, in their understanding, no line dividing local from federal authority, nor anything else, properly forbids the Federal Government to control as to slavery in Federal territory. This time the prohibition became a law, being part of what is now well known as the Ordinance of '87."

Lincoln candidly and openly (1) stated that the vote preceded the Constitution, (2) made no assertion that it supported the "constitutionality" of the legislation, and (3) used the vote to show the understanding at the time of the line dividing local from federal authority.

It is an old debating technique to state one's own version of an opponent's argument, and then to argue against the resulting straw man.

In paraphrasing, but not quoting, Lincoln's question, the authors never include his phrase "proper division of local from federal authority." Lincoln was responding to a famous article by Stephen A. Douglas in the September 1859 issue of Harper's entitled "The Dividing Line Between Federal and Local Authority: Popular Sovereignty in the Territories." Douglas wrote that the dividing line between federal and local authority was familiar to the "framers of the Constitution." He wrote that the colonial era, imperial England had no authority over "local" matters, including laws affecting slavery. Under the Articles of Confederation, he argued, the people of the territories had an inalienable right to govern themselves with respect to "internal polity," including slavery, while Congress was limited to federal affairs. This was the "dividing line." At Cooper Union, Lincoln countered with the principle that "no proper division of local from federal authority, nor any part of the Constitution, forbade the Federal Government to control slavery in the federal territories."

The authors assert a need to prove an absolute majority, but if 18 of 39 signers had voted for legislation restricting slavery in the territories after ratification, and only two voted against, then there would have been a clear plurality in favor. A plurality is still enough to elect a President, to elect Members of Congress in most states, and to enact legislation. The authors' chart lists "18 unique yes" votes. An 18-to-2 vote, with 19 silences, is very persuasive. So if Lincoln had addressed the question of constitutionality, he still would have had a strong argument.

The authors also note that neither a legislator's oath nor the Constitution itself can influence a vote prior to the Constitution's existence (p. 50). But if the three voters had in fact favored the policy of federal control of slavery in the territories under the Articles, then it would be reasonable to conclude that they favored the same policy as drafters of the Constitution, in the absence of any evidence that they intended a change in policy.

In short, the authors argue that three pre-Constitution votes on slavery were not relevant to the constitutionality of federal regulation of slavery in the territories, but they are wrong to claim that Lincoln said otherwise. Lincoln said that the pre-Constitution votes showed that the Framers believed that the "proper division of local from federal authority" did not preclude federal regulation of slavery in the territories.

Thus, the authors do not address the question Lincoln actually asked -- whether either the proper division of local from federal authority OR anything in the Constitution, forbids the federal government from controlling slavery in the territories. The reason that Lincoln asked that question is that that was the question that Douglas had raised in Harper's, and Lincoln disagreed with Douglas's answer to it. If the question had actually concerned solely the federal government's power under the Constitution, then the authors' point about Lincoln's use of pre-Constitution votes might be valid. But, because the question also concerned the proper division of local from federal authority, their point is not valid. They do not even mention Douglas's article.

A serious & complex book

Saying Abraham Lincoln is a brilliant writer will cause few arguments. Lincoln increased our vocabulary of phrases while defining how we see ourselves. His words are as fresh now as when spoken, the appeal to our better nature has not diminished. Many theories exist on how a self-education person could write such inspiring words. This book presents a compelling argument that Euclidean Geometry is the answer.

The book opens with a look at Lincoln as a student. Lincoln recalled his education as "readin, wrttin, and cipherin' and everything else learned "under the pressure of necessity". The authors maintain in "Unlocking Lincoln" that Lincoln transferred geometry into speech. The balance of the book looks at specific speeches and or incidents from Lincoln's life illustrating the development or application of this theory. The book's Appendix contains a series of Lincoln's speeches where the author's apply their idea illustrating how Lincoln applied Euclidean Geometry in each speech.

This is a serious and complex book. One author is an attorney and co-author of the technology column for the American Bar Association Journal. The other has a MS in mathematics and a PHD in electrical engineering. There is a series of charts and tables summarizing their ideas throughout the book. While not an easy read, it is not an impossible one. I followed the text with little difficulty for this type of book. The book is fully footnoted, indexed and contains a full bibliography.

This book will appeal to Lincoln scholars and mathematicians but is an informative read for our Civil War community. While not for everyone it is an above average book.

About the Author

Professor K.T. Chau, Ph.D., is the chair professor of geotechnical engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He obtained his Ph.D. in theoretical and applied mechanics from Northwestern University in Chicago and an executive certificate from the Graduate School of Business of Stanford University. Dr. Chau is a fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), the chairman of the Elasticity Committee (2009–2012) of the Engineering Mechanics Institute (EMI) of ASCE, and chairman of the TC103 of the ISSMGE. His research interests have included geomechanics and geohazards, including bifurcation and stability theories in geomaterials, rock mechanics, fracture and damage mechanics in brittle rocks3-D elasticity, earthquake engineering and mechanics, landslides and debris flows, tsunami and storm surges, and rockfalls and dynamic impacts, seismic pounding, vulnerability of tall buildings with transfer systems, and shaking table tests. This book covers everything a geomechanics researcher should master. Ranging from tensor calculus to fracture mechanics, the author strikes a good balance with the right depth and breadth for each topic. I also like the fact that each chapter ends with a number of well designed exercises.

Preface

The modern hospitality industry demands more of its chefs than ever before. Competitive markets and diverse workplaces have forced chefs to balance culinary artistry with business management and human relations skills. The role of chef has evolved. It is time that the education of young culinarians reflects the changes in the industry, and that working chefs are given the opportunity to learn management and human relations skills from those who have both industry experience and classroom knowledge.

The Chef Manager examines the role of the chef as kitchen manager, team coach, and culinary innovator. While a complicated study, The Chef Manager reflects practical experience and real life situations. Modern theories of management and human relations skills are explored in detail and given a hospitality twist that can be easily digested by culinary students and working chefs. Students can then practice their new knowledge in their workplaces and witness firsthand the transition of their kitchens and dining rooms from food factories to efficient, quality-inspired operations.

The Chef Manager also explores the concepts of Total Quality Management (TQM), a theory of management that helped revolutionize the industries of post-World War II Japan and made Japan a leader in the world's economy. TQM strategies now influence many American industries as they, too, try to improve efficiency and increase productivity with an emphasis on quality. A management theory founded by Edward Deming, with contributions from Philip Crosby and Joseph Juran, TQM promotes quality improvements through continual assessments of the efficiency of production and service processes.

For the hospitality industry, TQM reaffirms the customer's role as the ultimate inspector of quality in product, service, and value. TQM asks for input from all levels of employees and prescribes a teamwork approach to quality improvement. Management is asked to put aside quotas and incentives, and to focus their energies on developing and maintaining a quality workplace.

The team concept is a natural outcome of TQM implementation. Chefs take on the role of coach and use motivation and inspiration as tools of their new trade. The emphasis is placed on recruiting, training, and keeping quality employees. Everyone has an important role to play, and each contributes to the success of the operation.

There are many books that address culinary production and artistry, and many on cooking techniques and innovations. The Chef Manager helps pioneer a new study in the role of chef as manager and business person. The chef as manager has become the newest and most dramatic trend to affect the culinary profession since the invention of steel cooking pans and utensils. All professional chefs need to expand their culinary portfolios to include the people skills and management tools that The Chef Manager puts on the proverbial table.

Excellent! Long overdue. Culinary Art Schools are rolling out baby chefs in record numbers and although they may have the culinary knowledge, only time and experience will give them the managerment skill needed to operate a first rate, organized, efficient and effective restaurant. Management is tough in any field, but particularly so in the restaurant business and I hope Chef/Owner Managers will read and apply the management practices discussed in this book. Chef Mangers who did not have the opportunity to get formal culinary training may also find this book useful. The information on Total Quality Management could and perhaps should have been a separate book. Simply written, The Chef Manager deserves two thumbs up.

The Chef Manager is a must have book for anyone in culinary school. We learn so much about techniques and other aspects of business that we are never taught where this career field came from. As Chefs we should know not only techniques, but also our history and how standards came to be. Not only is this that perfect book that answers all those questions you never knew went unanswered, but the author is a wonderfully knowledgeable instructor. I personally have had the good fortune of being taught by him for the past three years. He is one of the most knowledgeable chefs in the field and continues learning and sharing knowledge with his students every semester.

Dr. Norman Vincent Peale is author of 46 books including his bestseller 'The Power of Positive Thinking.' Most all the other books are practically on this subject. Why he's so compelled into this practice is his purpose to tell others of God's Awesome Power comes from every good thought. That's the power of miracles. In the 12 specific ways to keep the Positive Principle going, Dr. Peale shows you how to sustain and hold onto that power. By using the Positive Principle it all start with the seven (7) magic words...Remember...Don't be afraid, just remember these seven (7) magic words-"I can do all things through Christ...." Believe in the miracle of change, and let Jesus take charge of your own mind and heart.

Dr. Peale also takes a new look at the word imPOSSIBLE without the IM attached. He relates of others the way they apporached the Positive Principle to reshape their lives. Tranformative book

Truly uplifting book, and not a bit out of date. This a transformative book. Read it (or any of Peale's other books) and you'll live better every day for the rest of your life.

So transformative that I immediately bought two more Peale books, and three more of this one to give. Two went to people I love, and the other to someone facing a hard time in life. They aren't readers, but were given with hope that when hard times come, they'll find what they need there.. Please, read this book (or any of Peale's books) and you'll live better every day for the rest of your life.

I read the three Peale books all at one time several months ago, and by now they are hopelessly conflated, so posting the same review for each.

I bought this because rummaging thru some old notes I made more than 30 years ago I found two or three notes made on one of Peale's books. That was a very lucky day.

About the Author
LARRY JAMES has provided executive leadership for CitySquare (formerly Central Dallas Ministries) since August 1994. CitySquare, a faith-based, human and community development corporation, serves several inner city neighborhoods in Dallas, Texas, as well as in San Antonio, Austin, Fort Worth, and Houston. James has developed and implemented holistic, justice-focused approaches to community service and outreach throughout his ministry. A native of Richardson, Texas, James is married to the former Brenda Erwin and they have two grown daughters and four grandchildren. Since 1999, Larry and Brenda have lived in inner-city Dallas.

In July 2012 the Associated Press reported that by the end of the year the national poverty rate would grow to 15.7 percent of the population, a number equaling poverty levels present in 1965 during the days of President Lyndon Johnson's "Great Society" and the "War on Poverty."

"Why do we fail to see the people?" asks Mr. James, the CEO of CitySquare a remarkable nonprofit based in Dallas. The goal is to "move as many people as possible from their current situation to self-sufficiency."

The book highlights foundational principles that drive CitySquare:
* Neighbors cannot be treated as projects and disconnected from us as human beings

* Neighbors cannot be treated as problems

* Neighbors cannot be treated as "opportunities for ministry"

* Neighbors must not be seen as clients. We call them neighbors, whoi must be trusted and valued as they are, for who they are.

Interspersed among great stories, the book highlights Eleven Principles. Among these 11 are:
#3. Communities have adequate assets to initiate renewal.
#5. Dare to Dream (and make alliances/partnerships everywhere - Public-Private; Corporate; Nonprofits).
#6. Racial reconciliation is a prerequisite for genuine community renewal.
#7. Partner or die.
#11. To nurture hope, we must give everything we have.

Here are three of my six takeaways:
#1. Don't give stuff - give money!
#5. Simple logic should prevail - it is "cheaper" and "better" to get a person into a "home of his/her own."
#6. Everything matters.

Though the book is readable and understandable for any reader, the book does include a lot of Christian Scripture. (Mr. James is a former minister, and his theology informs him every step of the way). But his efforts are truly inclusive.
This book is a call to build processes, public policy, and services that can lift people to "self-sufficiency."

Transforming

In reading The Wealth Of The Poor, I really learned more about what the subtitle says: How Valuing Every Neighbor Restores Hope in Our Cities. I have been so guilty over the years of thinking that if I was just charitable or if I volunteered some time, that I had done my "Christian Duty". Larry gives example after example in his book about how relationships are what is needed to restore hope in our cities. I need to spend more time with my neighbors and get to know them personally. I need to put myself in their shoes and ask myself "if it were me how would I want to be treated?" If you want to be transformed in the way you look at the poor and what you can do to help eliminate poverty, you will want to read this book.

Here just two of many quotes that were convicting for me
"People who are hungry, 'poor', homeless, ill, abandoned, strangers--the list goes on and on as we think about the possibilities attached to being human--don't need professionalism or service or case management as much as they need to be treated like regular people. After all that is exactly who they are--regular people with specific challenges, just like the rest of us. Most major life problems and challenges are best addressed in the context of genuine friendship."

"Stop talking about being redemptive, bring redemption
Stop talking about salvation, and insert a saving moment into the life of just one struggling person.
Stop preaching the message of reconciliation and become reconcilers.
Stop worrying about your message and live a message that produces hope."

outstanding book on social service

City Square is a service agency in Dallas, Texas, that offers a wide variety of services to the poor and homeless. Director Larry James has written an outstanding book that describes this program in some detail, including several personal stories along the way.

As a sociologist who has written two textbooks on poverty, I was pleased with the understanding of the poor revealed in this book, and learned some things myself. James shows a sophisticated understanding of the root causes of poverty, pointing out that bad choices of individuals are not the underlying reason for most poverty.

An important point recognized in the book is the enlightened and pragmatic self-interest in helping the poor. (Some people seem to think that if the poor are helped, that somehow hurts them.) That fewer people in poverty will reduce the size of our prisons, that prudent spending in areas where it is most needed will benefit everyone, are only two examples of this theme.

While City Square is church-related, the book should be helpful to anyone interested in working with the poor and needy, especially in an urban setting.

Good for a quick and simple introduction to Moroccan history

Usually when I travel to a country where I've never been, I purchase a book about its history so that I don't arrive as a blank page. I believe it's important to know where a people come from, where they are and where they're going. It shows respect to a people if you have taken the time to learn about their past.

This book does that, but leaves you longing for more. I believe that WWII onwards was covered in about 20 pages. Mention of massacres were truly glossed over in mere paragraphs and required an Internet search to learn more. The author does provide an "Additional Reading" section, which I appreciated, but at times I just wanted to see more.

Very little was spent on Moroccan's current king and I believe that a country with a monarch should have at least a chapter on him.

Regardless, if you're looking for a very brief history of a country without too many details, this is your book. It is written in a very fluid and easy to read manner. If you're looking for something in depth, keep looking.

Very Fine Survey Thru End of the 20th Century

Though "re-issued" in 2009, this book was first published in 2003. We should all hope that the writer will publish an updated edition to give us his analysis of the first 15 years of Muhammad VI's reign. What he has written is an excellent survey of Moroccan history for the intelligent layperson. He covers a mass of complicated conflicts without becoming overly academic. The style is very readable. One can easily get lost among the numerous contenders for power in Morocco over the last many centuries but Pennell doesn't get bogged down in the details. At the end he has a useful chapter with helpful comments and suggestions for further reading. This is an excellent introduction to the subject. Unless you are interested in doing serious academic research this book will probably tell you all you need to know about Moroccan history up to the beginning of the current century.

i can read these chapters over and over again

I've had the pleasure to read this book at 3am and picked it up on my kindle for iPhone and couldn't stop reading . As a women that has been through so much this book has helped me to have an understand of so many things and also is a wonderful outline to get over the pain of the past and start over . Love. The simple truth of it all.

Rare is the author who can pen the lyrics of your hearts song and speak through to your soul. Mr. Amari Soul has done exactly that. He has captivated an audience of the masses by speaking of love and relationships. He tells women do not be afraid to love again. But don't settle. Its okay to wait. He lets the gentlemen know what really is on the mind of women and how to love us they way we need to be loved. This is hands down the best love and relationship book I have ever had the pleasure of reading! He even encourages his audience to write their feelings in the book! The difference between a good writer and a great one is if they genuinely believe what they write. Mr. Amari Soul is phenomenal! He writes from his soul, he speaks through is spirit. It is genuine to have someone share their inner most personal thoughts all because he wants to change the world one heart a time. The words he has written speaks an undisputed truth! I have recommended this book and will continue to do so to anyone that has been, is currently or will be in a relationship. Definitely a must read!

Putting Everything On the line

This is a book for everyone. I have to say if I had this book 13 years ago, it would have changed my outlook on slot of things. My book came 4 days earlier than what it was supposed too and once I got it I couldn't put it down. I recommend this book to everyone who has teenage children, woman and men. It will teach your sons what a woman expects and teaches your daughters what to except what not to except and why they except what they have been excepting! It was very nice to finally put into perspective what I had dealt with for so many years and put a voice and name to it, when I could never express exactly how and what I've been through! Everyone made a big deal outta thinking like a man act like a lady, if you ask me this book is BETTER than that! Because woman can never think like a man and act like a lady. What Mr. Soul does is teach us that it's okay to think like a lady and act like a lady and as a lady why we tolerate what we do and then he goes even further to have you question yourself why you did. Awesome book
